On August 13, 2012, ESPN reported that although Penn State trustees had not taken a formal vote, a strong majority of members voiced support during this past Sunday’s meeting for Penn State president Rodney Erickson’s acceptance of the consent decree imposed by the NCAA in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal.
According to Board chairwoman Karen Peetz, a vote could not be taken because 10 days’ notice of the meeting was required. While the majority of the board supported Erickson and a desire to move forward, many were still critical of the NCAA’s sanctions.
Erickson has stated the consent decree was “a take-it-or-leave-it proposition” and any leak of the decree’s details would take the deal off the table, and harsher sanctions would have been imposed. As a result, Erickson only consulted with the university’s executive committee and received legal advice prior to signing the decree.
