The Big East Conference files a lawsuit against Texas Christian University (TCU) for not paying the conference $5 million after the institution backed-out of an agreement to become a league member. Instead, TCU joined the Big 12 Conference. The Big East filed its suit on Monday (June 12, 2012) in federal court in Washington, D.C. In November 2010, TCU agreed to become a member of the Big East. TCU’s start date in the conference was July 2012. According to the lawsuit, the Big East alleges TCU agreed to compensate the conference with a $5 million payment if the institution did not fulfill the agreement. In October 2011, TCU, which is currently in the Mountain West Conference, accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 in July 2012. TCU issued a statement in response to the lawsuit: “TCU administrators were surprised by this lawsuit and believe it is premature. The University is hopeful for an amicable resolution of this matter. Because of the pending litigation, TCU will have no further comment.”
