On May 4, 2012, Tristan Aird of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, published an article regarding Bishop Gorman High School’s failure to be included in the 2012 Sollenberger Classic. According to the article, Donald Campbell, Bishop Gorman’s special litigation counsel, has sent a public records request to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association seeking “cellphone records, e-mails, text messages and written materials.” Bishop Gorman, who has participated in three of the last four Sollenberger Classics, was not selected to participate in 2012 despite winning a third consecutive Nevada state football title in 2011.
Bishop Gorman officials believe the decision not to include them in this year’s competition could be a result of the ongoing discussions the school is having with the NIAA regarding its future within the association. Campbell stated they have “a significant body of evidence” that suggests the selection of teams was “anything but fair and impartial.”
